GHAZAL SINGER "JAGJIT SINGH" PASSES AWAY TODAY AT THE AGE OF 70

Acclaimed ghazal singer Jagjit Singh died on Monday in Mumbai. The 70-year old was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati hospital after he suffered brain hemorrhage last month. He underwent two surgeries and was on life support.

Born on February 8, 1941, 'the ghazal king' was a singer, composer, activist and entrepreneur. He has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali. Jagjit Singh entered the music circuit at a time which was primarily dominated by Pakistani ghazal singers, and Indian singers were considered relatively lesser authentic than their Pakistani counterparts.

Unlike other ghazal singers, Singh did not hesitate in lending his voice for films. His silky voice ruled during early 80's in films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath and Arth. However, his major work is spread over more than 60 filmy and non filmy albums.

Jagjit Singh was also known for modern approach and infusion of technology in the traditional art of ghazal singing. Singh was the first Indian music director to use the technique of multi-track recording for his album 'Beyond Time'.

Recipient of Padma Bhushan award, Jagjit Singh was the man behind making the ghazal genre available and understandable to all. Prior to Singh, ghazal singing was considered as an elite art, which was difficult for the common mass to understand due to high class Urdu and Persian.

Jagjit Singh broke this myth by coming up with songs such as 'Kaagaz ki kashti', 'Chaak jigar ke', 'Kal chadhanvi ki raat thi', and 'Shaam se aankh me name si hai'. He mixed the words of legends like Ghalib, Qateel Shifai, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Nida Fazli and Sudarshan Faakir with melodious indigenous tunes and achieved a state where nothing came in between him and his listeners.

Later when television started showcasing music videos, he was among one of the prominent members of the music fraternity to avail the facility. He again came up with brilliant albums such as 'Face to Face', 'Marasim', 'Aaeena', and 'Dil Kahin Hosh Kahin'.

Jagjit Singh had also given his voice for ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee poems in the albums 'Nayi Disha' and 'Samvedna'.

Jagjit Singh is survived by his wife Chitra Singh, with whom he had produced several record breaking albums. Their only son Vivek Singh had died in a road accident in 1990.

APPLE CO-FOUNDER "STEVE JOBS" PASSES AWAY AT THE AGE OF 56

He's the man responsible for changing the tech world as we know it, and now beloved Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has been laid to rest following his passing earlier this week (October 5).

According to The Wall Street Journal, the 56-year-old computer pioneer was buried yesterday (October 7) following a private funeral held at an undisclosed location and attended by only family and close friends.

Staying true to Jobs' extraordinarily secluded life wishes, family of the iconic entrepreneur hoped the closed-door ceremony would grant relief from a threatened protest from members of the Westboro Baptist Church, who planned to picket the funeral, saying Jobs "gave God no glory."

"We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief," his loved ones said in a statement.

While no public memorial service has been made clear as of yet, Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the company Jobs brought so much success is hard at work "planning a celebration of Steve's extraordinary life."

VETERAN ACTOR, SHAMMI KAPOOR IS DEAD

Veteran actor, Shammi Kapoor, who ruled the late 1950s and 1960s with his unique style and versatile range, passed away on Sunday, 14th August, 2011 at the Breach Candy Hospital here, family sources said.

He was 79. He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan Desai.
According to the sources, he was on dialysis for the last few years and was undergoing the procedure at least thrice a week. He was on Saturday admitted to the ICU of the hospital.

The actor, who made his debut in Bollywood in 1953, when the film Jeevan Jyoti was released, carved out a niche for himself with the superhit Junglee in 1961.

His new image took ground and his subsequent films were all in this genre later.

Kapoor, hailed as 'Elvis Presley of India', joined the silver screen at a time when his elder brother Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar were the reigning trio.

Kapoor was suffering from chronic renal failure, family sources said. The funeral will take place on Monday morning, they said.

Born Shamsher Raj Kapoor on October 21, 1931, Kapoor was the second son of veteran theatre and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

Despite his family background, Shammi's entry into Bollywood was initially not successful even though he worked with major heroines like Madhubala in Rail ka Dibba, Suraiya in Shama Parwana and Nalini Jaywant in Hum Sab Chor Hai.

His initial movies flopped at the Box Office. He reinvented himself with Tumsa Nahi Dekha cutting his hair in the famous duck-tail style of the 50s and never looked back since then.

With the success of Junglee in 1961, an entire decade reeled under its colourful impact.

Shammi heralded the swinging 60s and a large part of his appeal was primarily due to the immensely catchy and upbeat numbers like Suku Suku, O Haseena Zulfo Wali, Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche, Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyar Tera where he was at his boisterous best.

Even though success came with light weight tales like Kashmir Ki Kali, Rajkumar, Jaanwar and An Evening in Paris, his performances in flicks like Junglee, Badtameez, Bluff Master, Pagla Kahin Ka, Teesri Manzil, Brahmachari silenced his critics.

Andaz, which released in 1971, was his last movie as a leading man but his character roles in Vidhata, Hero and Prem Rog were well received.

Shammi was a computer aficionado and his last years were veered towards spiritualism.
